Since starting the trombone fifteen years ago, Barnaby has played music around the world with many different kinds of ensembles, all of varying genres. He has recorded, toured and performed with symphonic and operatic orchestras, chamber groups and as a soloist as well as with jazz, contemporary, ska, oompah and pop groups throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA.
Barnaby has been fortunate enough to play as part of groups and alongside artists such as the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Opera North, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Shakespeare’s Globe, The Hoosiers, The Walkmen, Newton Faulkner, Neil Sedaka, Helen Mirren, Jeremy Irons, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernard Haitink, Sir Mark Elder, John Wilson and Lorin Maazel as well as with Robin Gibb and Sir Tom Jones with whom he reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in 2008. As well as these freelance engagements and trials, Barnaby is on currently on trial for the position of Sub-Principal Trombone at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
In addition to being a founder of Riverside Brass Quintet, Barnaby spends a great deal of time developing other ensembles including Slide Project and London Chamber Brass. He particularly values these groups for the opportunity they present for him to contribute musical and creative decisions.
As well as being an experienced player, Barnaby also has a number of private pupils whom he teaches on a weekly basis. Additionally, he has a strong interest in drama, reading, writing and photography and is always keen to integrate them all with each other, and with music, as much as possible.
